Jidoka (Autonomation)

What is it?
Jidoka, often translated as autonomation or ‘automation with a human touch,’ is a principle of the Toyota Production System whereby machines and operators must be able to immediately recognize an abnormality and stop the process to prevent defects from continuing downstream. This way, quality is not just checked at the end, but built directly into the process, at the moment the problem manifests itself.

How can I help?
Applying Jidoka helps to catch errors and defects at the source, reduce rework, waste, and the costs of poor quality, as well as make problems more visible and addressable in real-time. It is particularly useful when a company wants to increase process reliability, improve operational quality, and empower people in continuous improvement.
