SMED – Single Minute Exchange of Die (Quick Changeover)

What is it?
A method for enabling rapid changeovers. Typically reducing the changeover time to less than 10 minutes. The SMED steps include:

1. document the current state
2. Separate internal tasks from external tasks
3. move internal activities to the outside
4. Simplify internal tasks
5. design parallel work
6. Streamline external tasks
7. define and distribute the standard

Internal tasks must be done when the machine is stopped, while external tasks are done while the process is running.
